Email or E-Mail or Electronic Communication

October 28th, 2008 by DJ Waldow

As with many conversations these past few months, it started with a simple tweet by @chadswhite (aka, Chad White of eec and Retail Email Blog fame). Chad and the eec started a new Facebook group called, “I know how to spell email.” According to the page description, this group was created to, “help convince publishers and the dictionary holdouts that they’re behind the times with their hyphenated spelling. Email has evolved from its “electronic mail” roots, and so has the spelling.” As of this writing, the group already claims over 60 members! (nudge: Join Now).

Chad’s post created a mini-buzz / debate around Bronto (see below):

I will not attempt to recreate the great conversation on this blog that is currently happening within the Facebook Group. I think where I stand is clear (hint: I joined “I know how to spell email” group). My recommendation?

  1. Go to Facebook Group
  2. Join
  3. Start a discussion
  4. Write on the wall
  5. Connect with others
  6. Debate, discuss, get involved

What are you waiting for?

Jeanniey Mullen of the eec recently posted “Email - The Battle Never Ends” on the eec blog. In the article she voices her frustration with the bad rap that email has taken over the years. As Jeanniey puts it, “email has been battling for respect since day one, like one of those little toy soldiers battling their way through the real (and very large) world.”

On this day - Thursday, April 10th, 2008 - I join Jeanniey and the eec in addressing the “email battle.” I’ve heard some refer to email as the “digital glue.” Think about email in the context of new technologies, widgets, killapps, fads, trends, etc.

For example, the interplay between email and…

  1. Facebook/LinkedIn/MySpace
  2. Email Marketers Club
  3. Twitter (quickly becoming my new addiction)

On Monday, a team of 4 Brontos will be flying to sunny San Diego, California for 3 1/2 days of insightful analysis of email marketing - the Email Evolution Conference to be specific.

According to the conference site, “…you’ll learn what’s considered the “best practices” of email, as well as “leading-edge” strategies and techniques to optimize your marketing efforts. You’ll hear experienced email marketers and industry leaders openly and honestly share their successes, challenges and outlook for the future. ”

At 4PM PST (tentatively), Chad White of the EEC and I will be filming a live version of BrontoFire. On Wednesday, CEO Joe Colopy will be moderating a panel titled, The Big Bang Theory: Sending, Reporting, and Analyzing Results. He’ll be joined by Bill McCloskey (CEO of Email Data Source) and Bronto client Casey Kohner (eCommerce Manager, Trek Bicycle).
