We’ve received lots of questions since we launched Campaigns, available in Bronto Labs. Here are common questions and a few best practices, tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way to make your job a little bit easier.
Why Should I Enable Campaigns in Bronto Labs?
This feature provides easy alignment of your marketing campaigns with your messages in Bronto.
- Simple, straightforward management using Bronto’s familiar interface.
- Powerful campaign automation via Workflows integration.
- Quick behavioral segmentation of contacts at the campaign level.
- Full campaign-level metrics reporting and monitoring using New Reports.
What’s the Difference Between Delivery Groups and Campaigns?
A campaign in Bronto is a specific series of messages that align with your email strategy. Campaigns allow for simple, automated groupings of deliveries and messages to give you a single point of reference for easy management, reporting and tracking.
Unlike Delivery Groups, Campaigns:
- Are designed to represent your real-world email campaigns in Bronto.
- Display campaign-level metrics which are supported in New Reports.
- Are seamlessly integrated into Bronto workflows, providing automation of a single or multiple campaigns within a workflow.
- Do not allow historical metrics to change when they are edited, so you don’t lose insight into past performance data.
- Are required as part of the delivery scheduling process to ensure thorough tracking of campaign-level metrics in your account. Assign a campaign in seconds during message creation.
What Should I Know About Campaigns?
Once campaigns are enabled, all sends (excluding API), whether scheduled or sent as part of a workflow, require campaign association. You can associate a message with a campaign when creating the message (recommended) or when you schedule a delivery of the message. Once you associate it, all future deliveries of the message will automatically be included in the respective campaign, unless you change it.
In Workflows, the Send Email node now requires a campaign to be selected. You can do it right from the node if you have multiple messages going out that are part of different campaigns, or you can just set a campaign for the entire workflow. If you choose the latter, all Send Email nodes you add will default to your workflow-level campaign. If you have existing workflows, the next time you edit one that contains a Send Email node, the workflow will require you to assign a campaign via the new field.

What Else Should I Know?
It is important to know what data to expect in your new Campaign View. You can access this by clicking on Campaigns in the Messages menu, then clicking on any campaign name in the list. Currently, campaign view shows only the deliveries that are scheduled and sent after campaigns are enabled, in addition to associated messages. Why is that detail important? Let’s say today is 6/30/2017, and I scheduled a delivery for 8/15/2017. I enable campaigns on 7/15/17 and assign a campaign to this delivery. Will this delivery show under campaign reporting? No, because the delivery was scheduled prior to enabling Campaigns.
This leads me to the next tip. When you enable Campaigns, we recommend you create your actively running ones immediately from the main Campaigns page. This way, they are all instantly available when creating new messages, scheduling deliveries and editing workflows. While you can create them on the fly during these processes, doing this step in advance will save time. Creating a campaign is simple and can be done in a matter of seconds.
Once you have been using Campaigns for a while and you have multiple campaigns to search through, it’s helpful to limit the number of campaigns that display on your main dashboard in Bronto to a number fewer than 100. Use the drop-down menu shown in the image. To dive deeper, use the search feature instead. This is a useful tip for every main screen in Bronto.
As with all features in Bronto Labs, this is the time to test how the functionality of Campaigns will improve your business. This stage is iterative, so features improve in design and functionality over time, and you can expect to see frequent enhancements.

If you’ve enabled New Reports, you can enable Campaigns. Simply log into your Bronto account, navigate to Settings > General > Bronto Labs and click the toggle to enable this feature. Following these tips should help you use Campaigns more smoothly and effectively.
