Kelly,

Great post. I think they did it right, but not sure how many people would have the patience to go thru the entire reg process just to get email and a potential savings. Would be great to grab some info and then progressively profile via emails and offers for the rest of the info, but what do I know right.

Curious as to the actual email that was sent to you and wondering why it was in plain text.

Great post Kelly! I love how easy and fun the sign-up process looked, although like Andrew said, I’m not sure how many people would actually have the patience to fill the whole thing in. A smaller, more simplistic opt-in process would have been better with a follow up email for more information down the track.

Josh.

Thanks for adding your thoughts Andrew and Josh! I agree that the sign-up process was arduous and likely has a high abandonment rate. They also have a confirmed opt-in, which just seems a bit over the top after the 5 page sign-up process. Certainly the majority of this could be pushed to the Welcome message preferences request, which I’m sure would get a high response rate.

With that said, their emails are highly targeted and promote great deals for major brands. Minus 4 of the 5 sign-up pages, Shop It To Me is in the elite group that “gets” email marketing.

Thanks again!

Ps. My guess on the plain text forward email is that they were looking to make it seem as if I received an email directly from my friend and not from the brand. I would have liked to have seen an example of one of their emails as that could have provided an additional incentive and perhaps wrap the email with their branded template. Shop It To Me: any feedback?

Kelly - thanks for the compliments and we’re glad that you found the sign up process compelling.

In terms of the confirmation email that we send, we do so to ensure people are signing themselves up with a valid email address of their own. You wouldn’t believe how many times people mistakenly misspell their email address — and then other people start receiving emails they didn’t intend to receive! The double opt-in is an effort to ensure that everyone who receives an email from us truly intended to do so.

We wish you lots of good luck in finding all of your personal favorite fashion brands at great prices - happy shopping!

Tamra,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing some “behind the scenes” information! I certainly understand the argument to send the confirmation email, and won’t, for the sake of this blog post topic, get into the different viewpoints at this time :).

Care to share any thoughts on SITM’s sign-up process? Do you see high/low abandonment rates? What was the strategy behind setting up the sign-up form as is?

Thanks again for sharing your feedback!
